Woman Turns Online Harassment Into Art

We’ve all received messages we didn’t ask for, especially if you’ve been on sites such as Tinder, Match.com, OkCupid, etc. You would think that getting flooded with messages on online dating sites would be a good thing, right? Not in this case.

When Emmie Tsumura, a Toronto-based illustrator, received dozens of unwanted offensive advances from various men while on online dating sites, she turned to her artistic ways to deal with it. The result? See for yourself:

Safety for Women while Dating Online is Important

Tsumura’s curiosity quickly took her from feeling “shocked and offended” to “fascinated”.

“Part of me is saying, ‘Are you f***ing kidding me!’ Another part of me is feeling super sad and alone. Another part is saying, ‘This is hilarious!‘”

One thing was for sure: she was done with the harassment, misogyny, and being fetishized. But just when she was getting ready to throw in the towel and give up online dating for good, she decided to expose the men approaching her instead. She simply drew their face alongside their ‘pick-up lines’ as illustrated above, literally.

At first, she only showed her art to her close friend, but after receiving positive feedback she launched the Instagram account @ok_cucumber to showcase her creations to a bigger audience.

missbelledr : Love your illustrations!!! So accurate. Soooo frustrating ??

Judging from the comments above, which was originally posted on Instagram, people seem to take a liking to Tsumura’s work. And why wouldn’t they?! Not only did she make awesome drawings- but she also cleverly turned a negative dating experience (that apparently many women can relate to) into something positive- and perhaps empowering. This has to be one of the most creative ways to bring attention to the harassment women face on/offline; an issue often overlooked.
