There are a lot of lonely people out there in the world. For this reason, dating sites are becoming more and more popular. According to Forbes, there are over 8,000 dating sites that are active right now, and that number is growing.

If you do the math and figure each successful dating site has one thousand people, you end up with roughly eight million people all searching for love. Out of that many people, you can safely bet there are at least a few bad apples.

It is not surprising that there is often trouble on these sites that put people at risk. As awful as it may sound, the truth is that people who innocently look for love and companionship can be putting themselves at risk for bad things to happen.

The story below is about a woman who decided to poke fun at the situation. It is a good thing she was able to walk away without being victimized. She may or may not have had access to the powerful search tools that SpyFly provides, but if she did she knows that it only takes a few minutes to find out the truth about people.

Even if the people are random strangers that send unsolicited messages. If she were to have fallen for any of the advances these guys made at her, she would have been able to check them out and see who they really were. Things like this could happen to anybody. You have the power to not let them happen to you.

Poking Fun at Danger

We’ve all received messages we didn’t ask for, especially if you’ve been on sites such as Tinder, Match.com, OkCupid, etc. You would think that getting flooded with messages on a dating site would be a good thing, right? The reason why somebody would sign up in the first place is to connect with compatible people. Not in this case.

When Emmie Tsumura, a Toronto-based illustrator, received dozens of unwanted offensive advances from various men while on dating sites, she turned to her artistic ways to deal with it. She successfully used her amazing skills to capture the moments and bring them to life for an audience. And they loved it. The result? See for yourself:

Some of the guys were blatantly disrespectful, while others were a bit tactful. In the end, there was a large number of men that seemed to take pleasure in badgering her with weak pickup lines and weird requests.

Tsumura’s curiosity quickly took her from feeling “shocked and offended” to “fascinated”. After seeing so many of the bizarre messages, she began to see the humor in it all and looked at the whole thing as a joke. She began to realize that most of the guys were lonely, pathetic men that had no idea of how to communicate with a woman.

“Part of me is saying, ‘Are you f***ing kidding me!’ Another part of me is feeling super sad and alone. Another part is saying, ‘This is hilarious!‘”

One thing was for sure: she was done with the harassment, misogyny, and being fetishized. But just when she was getting ready to throw in the towel and give up online dating for good, she decided to expose the men approaching her instead. She simply drew their face alongside their ‘pick-up lines’ as illustrated above, literally.

Social Media Magnitude

At first, she only showed her art to her close friend, but after receiving positive feedback she launched the Instagram account @ok_cucumber to showcase her creations to a bigger audience.

missbelledr : Love your illustrations!!! So accurate. Soooo frustrating ??

Judging from the comments above, which was originally posted on Instagram, people seem to take a liking to Tsumura’s work. And why wouldn’t they?!

Not only did she make awesome drawings- but she also cleverly turned a negative dating experience (that apparently many women can relate to) into something positive- and perhaps empowering. This has to be one of the most creative ways to bring attention to the harassment women face on/offline; an issue often overlooked.

Stories like these are extraordinary examples of how powerful social media can be. One woman had the courage to illustrate an uncomfortable occurrence in a humorous way and push it out into the world wide web. A lot of people have seen the posts and the artwork, maybe even a few of the guys that messaged her. This shows that you don’t have to put up with nonsense from pervy guys that send creepy messages, you can publicly display their behavior and hopefully inspire them to learn some manners.
